Joel Pelletier Photography

Julius Shulman was not a friend of mine. But he WAS an aquiantance, someone I would occaisionally drop by and visit (or bother) at his home here in Los Angeles from 2007-2009. His work moves me, both in the subject matter (modernist architecture) and in his technique and aesthetic. I wanted to paint his portrait, and he graciously permitted me to take some photos of his wonderful home, and eventually (if reluctantly) even of himself. He said he thought I was good photographer, which is thrilling enough to me! We talked about art, photography, architecture, desserts, women and Nova Scotia (amongst many other things, and not necessarily in that order). We also talked about digital cameras, which he was curious about, but by the time I had the money to get a really good one (a Canon 5D MKII with a 16-35mm lens, which I have since name "Julius") he was gone at the ripe old age of 98. I never had the chance to show him the photos I have taken with his namesake (along with older ones taken with the little Kodak with a 23mm fixed lens that initially intriged him), but I can share them here.
